Embracing Spring - Awakening with Nature

Spring is nature’s true New Year—a season of renewal, growth, and awakening. As the days lengthen and the sun’s warmth increases, so does our energy. Just as the trees bud and flowers bloom, we, too, have an opportunity to expand, refresh, and align with the rhythms of nature.

Awakening from Winter’s Stillness

Over the winter months, we tend to slow down, rest, and even hibernate in our own way. Now, as the light returns, our bodies and minds naturally crave movement, activity, and engagement. This is a time to lean into that energy, allowing ourselves to stretch towards new goals, habits, and intentions.

A Season for Detox & Renewal

Spring is also an ideal time for cleansing—both internally and externally. In Ayurveda, the term ama refers to the toxic buildup that can accumulate in the body, leading to sluggishness and stagnation. Similarly, in Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is associated with the Wood element, which governs the liver and gallbladder—the organs responsible for detoxification and transformation.

So, how can we support this natural process?

Nourishing the Body

  • Hydration: Staying well-hydrated helps flush out toxins and keeps everything moving smoothly.

  • Bitter & Cruciferous Foods: Foods like dandelion greens, rocket, kale, and chicory stimulate digestion and support liver function.

  • Herbal Allies: Artichoke, rosemary, turmeric, and milk thistle are powerful herbs that aid liver and gallbladder health.

  • Castor Oil Packs: Applying castor oil packs over the liver can help boost circulation to the organ, encouraging detoxification.

Moving with the Season

  • Physical Activity: Moving more—whether through walks in nature, yoga, or other gentle exercise—stimulates circulation, promotes digestion, and helps eliminate waste.

  • Energy Flow: Practices like Yin Yoga or acupressure can stimulate the liver and gallbladder meridians, encouraging balance and detoxification.

  • Connecting with Nature: Take time to be outside, breathe in fresh air, and walk through woodlands. If you’re local, a trip to the arboretum or Wisley gardens is a perfect way to soak in the spring energy.

Spring Cleaning for You & Your Space

Just as we cleanse our bodies, spring is a great time to declutter and freshen up our homes. Consider natural cleaning alternatives—lemon, bicarbonate of soda, and vinegar can work wonders without introducing unnecessary chemicals. Open your windows wide to let in fresh air and clear out any lingering toxins. And don’t forget to wear slippers indoors for a few days after deep cleaning to minimize exposure to residues on the floors! (Pretty much the only time I'm not championing the barefoot life)!

Embrace the Bloom, Mindfully

While this season calls us to action, be mindful not to let the rush of energy overwhelm you. Take moments to pause, appreciate the blossoms, and enjoy the beauty around you.
